15.3, a classic CrossFit Triplet! For the first time in the history of the CrossFit Open, HQ decided to start a workout with Muscle Ups – drawing a definitive line in the sand between scaled and rx athletes. While the RX workout demanded skill and strength, the scaled workout was a simple and sinister test of your metabolic capacity! How are your quads feeling?
By placing the Muscle Up as the first movement in 15.3 – HQ have set the standard of what they believe is an RX athlete. Did you spend enough of your training in the past year focusing on gymnastics skills and strength?
Remember no one is born with the skills/strength to do a muscle up (unless you’re Braggins) – they had to build the right pulling/pressing strength; rip their wrists practicing the ring transitions, and grind through the pain of false grip. Don’t be disheartened if you didn’t get a Muscle Up this time round – instead get motivated, spend time building the strength, and practicing the drills.
It’s within EVERYONE to get this skill – at the end of the day, it’s not even a skill, it’s just a way that young gymnasts used to get from below the rings, to above!

- Brendan Gillen – first muscle up!
- Elin Engman, and Vanessa Phua – if 15.3 was about effort on the rings, these two would have won! Those muscle ups aren’t far away, keep working the drills, and I think we’ll see one in the next few weeks!
